Valentine's Day is all about love.
In general, I am particularly happy about homemade gifts.
For this reason, I always want to fashion personal and creative Valentine's Day gifts for my loved ones to express my appreciation.
This year, I chose air-drying modelling clay.
You can make lots of things with it and it is easy to use.
Using the modelling clay, some paint and magnets I created unique magnetic hearts.
They, quite literally, come from the heart and look super decorative!
Magnetic hearts are a great romantic Valentine's Day gift for your partner, but these homemade decorative magnets will also bring joy as small gifts for friends.
So that you too can give your loved ones a gift for Valentine's Day, I am going to show you how to create these heart magnets in just a few steps.

Cut shapes from modelling clay
Tear off a piece of modelling clay and roll it out to an even thickness using, for example, a glass. I used Christmas biscuit cutters to cut the hearts. Of course, it doesn’t have to be hearts – for a change, I also cut round discs with a lid or a drinking glass and then painted hearts on them.My tip:
If you want to work a pattern into the modelling clay, do this before you cut the shapes.
This way, the heart will keep its shape, and you can choose where the pattern is located on the shape.
Sand the edges of the hearts
I left the cut-out shapes to dry for 1–2 days. This worked best when I placed them on a rack, which allowed air to reach both sides of the material. Once the shapes were completely dry, I used fine sandpaper to carefully sand down any unsightly or sharp edges.If there are any unsightly grooves left on the surface, you can smooth those out by sanding as well.
Decorate the magnetic hearts
Now comes the fun part of creating your Valentine's Day gift – the hearts need to be painted and decorated. I used acrylic paint in different colours to paint the shapes. I had to apply up to three coats, depending on the opacity of the paint. It's important to leave each coat to dry for a day or overnight. Otherwise, you may end up with cracks in the paint.There are no limits to your imagination when painting these magnetic hearts.
You can also add some glitter to the wet paint for a special effect.
Once the paint dries, the glitter will stick to the shape.
Glue magnets to the hearts
In this step, these personal hearts made from modelling clay are turned into magnets. I tried different types of magnets and recommend the neodymium magnets type S-10-02-N and S-08-02-N or also the ferrite disc magnets type FE-S-20-05. Attach the disc magnets to the back of the hearts with a little magnet adhesive. The glue should then be allowed to dry overnight.And with that, your unique Valentine's gift is finished! I am certain that all of your magnetic hearts will look great!
Magnetic clips instead of decorative magnets
In addition to magnets, the hearts can also be glued to clips. I glued smaller hearts onto the magnetic clips 'Graffa' silver blue and the magnetic clips 'Clipper', both from the supermagnete assortment. This way, you can create wonderful clips you can use to attach love messages, pictures or shopping lists. The ideal alternative to decorative magnets.My creations
Here, I show you a few of my creations. Instead of turning all of my modelling clay hearts into magnets, I used a knitting needle to make a hole in some of them at the beginning of the process. Those hearts can now be hung with a pretty fabric ribbon or used to decorate gift wrappings. They are also nice as decorations for Valentine's Day.My tip for delicate patterns in the material: If you have a lace doily or lace ribbon at home, you can use your fingers to press it into the rolled-out modelling clay and then carefully pull it off again.
This will create a beautiful lace pattern in the material.
Next, you can cut the hearts at the desired spot.
